Are You a Candidate For Shockwave Therapy?

More Than a Buzzword

“Shockwave” can sound intense, and many people hear the word and think of electrical shocks. It is not. Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy uses high-energy acoustic (sound) waves delivered outside the body to the targeted tissue. These pressure waves were originally refined from the technology used to break up kidney stones and have been adapted for musculoskeletal care.

The acoustic pulses create a controlled mechanical stimulus deep in the tissue. This stimulates increased blood flow and new vessel growth, helps break down stubborn scar tissue and calcifications, triggers the release of growth factors, and restarts the body’s natural healing cascade in areas that have stalled. We have seen excellent results for patients with chronic tendon problems, plantar fasciitis, calcific deposits, and other soft-tissue conditions that have not fully responded to rest, adjustments, or conventional care alone. The treatment is non-invasive, drug-free, and performed right in the office. Call us today: (816) 795-1121.

What is Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT)?

ESWT is a painless-to-mildly uncomfortable, non-invasive, drug-free treatment that uses focused or radial acoustic waves to treat chronic tendinopathies, fasciopathies, calcifications, and other musculoskeletal conditions. It is used when patients want to avoid injections or surgery, when healing has plateaued, or when faster recovery of injured soft tissue is desired.

How does shockwave therapy heal?

Shockwave devices deliver short bursts of acoustic energy through the skin into the injured area. These pressure waves create a mechanical stimulus (mechanotransduction) that:

  • Increases local blood flow and encourages new vessel formation
  • Stimulates cellular repair activity and the release of growth factors
  • Helps disrupt disorganized scar tissue and calcific deposits so healthier tissue can form
  • Modulates pain signaling and reduces local inflammation

The result is accelerated healing, improved tissue quality, and lasting pain reduction in many chronic soft-tissue conditions.

What should I expect during treatment?

Treatment is performed in the office and is typically brief. A small amount of gel is applied to the skin, and the applicator is moved over the target area. Most patients feel a rapid tapping or pulsing sensation. Intensity is adjusted for your comfort. Sessions usually last only a few minutes. Mild temporary soreness, redness, or sensitivity in the treated area can occur afterward and generally resolves within a day or two. There is no downtime—you can return to normal activities immediately in most cases.

What are the most common conditions treated with shockwave therapy?

Plantar fasciitis (with or without heel spur), Achilles tendinopathy, tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis), golfer’s elbow, rotator cuff and calcific shoulder tendinopathy, patellar tendinopathy, greater trochanteric pain, chronic muscle trigger points, and certain stubborn soft-tissue injuries are among the conditions that respond well. We have also used it successfully as part of care for carpal tunnel-related soft-tissue issues and other chronic tendon problems that have not fully resolved with other conservative approaches.
