A pinched nerve in your back can lead to severe pain that radiates from your lower back down the back of one leg, extending from the buttock to the back of the thigh and even into the calf and foot.
Pinched nerve symptoms may start suddenly or develop gradually, often presenting as sharp, shooting pain that resembles an electrical shock. Moving the affected leg, back, or other body parts can intensify this pain.
While pain from a pinched nerve may be spread uniformly along the leg, certain areas may experience more intense discomfort. This pain frequently comes with numbness or tingling sensations along the sciatic nerves, the longest nerve group in the body that stretches from the lower back down both legs.
Causes of a Pinched Nerve
A pinched nerve can occur due to processes that create pressure or irritation on the nerve roots that form the sciatic nerve. This pressure can stem from various factors, including a ruptured intervertebral disc, spinal stenosis (narrowing of the bony spinal canal), or, in rare cases, an infection or tumor.
The sciatic nerve, the largest and longest nerve in the body, measures three-quarters of an inch in diameter in adults and originates in the sacral plexus, the network of nerves in the lower back (lumbosacral spine). Its branches are responsible for motor and sensory functions in the thigh, knee, calf, ankle, foot, and toes.
Compression or “pinching” of your sciatic nerve can cause pain along these pathways, explaining why pinched nerve pain can radiate to other areas of your body. Such pain may result from a bulging or herniated disk, degenerative disk disease, piriformis syndrome, pregnancy, spinal stenosis, a spinal tumor, spinal infection, or trauma.
Any of these conditions can exert pressure on the sciatic nerve or other related nerve roots in your lower back, leading to the pain and other symptoms you experience.
